Bone Density Testing/ DEXA technology:
At MWC we offer osteoporosis screening using DEXA technology. We have certified bone densitometrists who interpret the DEXA scans and make recommendations for treatment. We can also evaluate patients for the cause of low bone mass.

Osteoporosis is a disease of low bone mass which can lead to fractures. There are no symptoms until a bone breaks. A spine fracture may cause significant pain. Hip fractures can be devastating as 25% of people with a hip fracture die within a year and 50% are permanently incapacitated. Fortunately low bone mass can be detected early using Dual – energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). This is a painless test that has exposes you to less radiation than daily living.

Risks for osteoporosis include:
Low body weight (127 lbs or less)
Family history of osteoporosis
Personal history of bone fracture with minimal trauma
Smoking
Advanced age
Low estrogen status usually due to natural or surgical menopause
Use of steroids such as prednisone
Low calcium intake
Lack of exercise
